Fine line tattooing is a quiet, careful style of work: single-needle linework drawn directly onto the skin to make small, meaningful pieces that age gracefully. Sophie Dean works from the studio by appointment, alongside the permanent makeup practice.
It's a lovely style for first tattoos, memorial pieces, names, dates, florals and small symbols, from tiny wrist pieces to more detailed work. Sophie also works in delicate geometric and minimalist designs. It's intentionally understated: personal, not decorative.
A tattoo should feel like yours. Quiet enough to live with, strong enough to carry meaning.
Every piece begins with a friendly consultation about your idea, references, placement and scale. Sophie designs with you, refining a stencil or freehand outline, and nothing goes ahead until you've approved it.
Because the work uses single or small needle groupings, most clients find it far gentler than traditional tattooing, often just a light scratch or tickle, with breaks whenever you need them.
How a piece comes together
Tell Sophie what you're thinking: a reference, a story, a date. She'll come back with an honest sense of fit, size and pricing.
A friendly in-studio session to talk placement and scale. Sophie creates the design and shows it to you as a stencil or outline before anything is committed.
Nothing goes ahead until the drawing is exactly right and you've signed it off, on paper and positioned on your skin.
A single-needle session, its length depending on size and detail. Numbing balm is available on request, and Sophie checks in for comfort throughout.
Detailed written aftercare and a small kit. Surface healing takes around 3–5 days, settling fully over a couple of weeks; Sophie is on hand by message the whole way through.
Pricing depends on the size, detail and placement of your piece, and is quoted at your free design consultation with Sophie. Custom designs are drawn for you and never re-used for another client.

A few things worth knowing
How small can it be?+
Single-needle linework allows for genuinely small pieces. There's a practical lower limit. Go too tiny and fine lines blur as they heal, so Sophie will advise on the smallest size that will still look crisp in years to come.
Does it hurt?+
Most clients find fine line work much gentler than traditional tattooing, often just a light scratch or tickle. Sessions include breaks, and numbing balm is available on request for longer or more sensitive placements.
Will it last?+
Fine line work fades more gently than heavier styles, but it does soften over time, especially with sun exposure. With good sun care and the occasional touch-up, a fine line piece holds beautifully for years.
Can I see previous work?+
Yes. Sophie's portfolio lives on her Instagram and in the studio. Have a look before your consultation so you arrive with a sense of style as well as subject.
Can Sophie draw a custom design?+
Absolutely. Most pieces are bespoke. Bring an idea, a feeling, or a few references and Sophie will refine it into something that's genuinely yours.
